Symptoms and Signs:
Chemical allergies primarily result in a skin reaction as your body attempts to eliminate the chemical through the largest organ on your body.
Other symptoms of a chemical allergies include arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, depression, diarrhea, eczema, fatigue, headaches, intestinal disorders, nausea, ringing in the ears, stuffy nose, upset stomach, and watery eyes.
Causes:
Chemicals that commonly cause an allergic reaction include air pollution, carbolic acid, chemical cleaning products, chlorine, disinfectants, formaldehyde, hair sprays, insecticides, paint, phenol, pesticides, and metals such as nickel, mercury, chrome, and beryllium.
Dental fillings containing mercury and silver can also cause an allergic reaction. Heavy metal poisoning, such as from cadmium, mercury, and lead, can also cause a reaction.
What to Expect:
One or more of the above mentioned symptoms will be experienced until the allergen has been cleared from your system. Symptoms may develop immediately or take twenty-four or more hours to develop following exposure. Symptoms often continue until exposure has been eliminated.
Chemical allergies also cause an excess strain on various bodily systems. Your lymphatic and immune systems must exert more energy to deal with the allergens and may become subsequently weakened. This can lead to a greater susceptibility to ailments that require direct immune system action during the healing process, such as when dealing with a cold or flu.
