Description

Hyperthyroidism involves the thyroid gland and is characterized by an overproduction of hormones. The pituitary gland is responsible for secreting thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) that stimulates the thyroid gland. The hormones of the thyroid regulate the metabolism of every cell in the body and a surplus in this gland can result in the malfunction of a number of bodily functions. Specific processes that are disrupted include those related to RNA protein formation and increased oxygen consumption by most cells.

An overactive thyroid results in an increased metabolic state. This is characterized by an increase in bodily functions, such as digestion. Malabsorption often occurs and a balanced diet is imperative.

Symptoms and Signs:

Hyperthyroidism develops in adulthood and is not genetic in nature.

There are a number of signs of an overactive thyroid but the main symptoms are similar for all cases. These include a rapid heartbeat, enlarged thyroid also known as a goiter, moist skin, tremors, high blood pressure, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, weight loss, chest pain, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
