Page 1 of 6 Description Hypothyroidism is associated with the thyroid gland and is characterized by a reduction in hormone release. The hormones of the thyroid regulate the metabolism of every cell in the body and a deficiency of these hormones can result in the malfunction of a number of bodily functions. The pituitary gland is responsible for secreting thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) that stimulates the thyroid gland. Primary Hypothyroidism When blood thyroid hormone levels are low, the pituitary gland is signaled and secretes TSH which stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete thyroid hormones. If thyroid hormones are low and TSH is high, this indicates defective thyroid hormone synthesis by the thyroid and is referred to as primary hypothyroidism. Primary hypothyroidism cases are most common. Secondary Hypothyroidism Secondary hypothyroidism occurs when both TSH and thyroid levels are low. The pituitary gland is thus responsible for low thyroid function.
