Description

This infection also goes by the name tinea cruris, tinea of the groin, or ringworm of the groin. Men are most often affected, but women can contract it as well.

Symptoms and Signs:

The characteristic "butterfly" rash is red and itchy and involves the crural fold (the very upper part of the inner thigh adjacent to the groin). It can spread to the scrotum, penis, thighs, perianal area and buttocks.

Causes:

Jock itch is usually caused by Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, or Epidermophyton floccosum, the same fungi that cause athlete's foot. Thus, it is possible to infect yourself if you are suffering from athlete's foot.

Contributing factors to the pathology and recurrence of jock itch are obesity, hot weather, excessive sweating, and chafing garments.

Herbs

Black walnut is a great antiseptic. Take 10 to 30 drops tincture daily. You can also make a poultice and apply it directly on the affected area.

Taking echinacea will enhance the effectiveness of other remedies. If using a tincture, take 20 to 40 drops in a glass of water three times daily. If using a supplement, take 300mg powdered extract three times daily. If preparing a tea/decoction, bring 2 teaspoons echinacea root and 1 cup of water to a boil. Simmer 15 minutes. Drink up to 3 cups a day. The taste may be initially sweet, then bitter. People over 65 should start with a low strength preparation and increase as required

Garlic is a powerful anti-fungal agent. Add to your favourite meal and enjoy the numerous benefits. If you prefer to go "sans aroma", you may also take odourless garlic capsules. If eating whole cloves, take 2 to 4 daily. If using capsules, take 600 to 1,200mg once or twice daily with meals. If using a tincture, take 2 to 4mL three times daily.

Ginger contains many anti-fungal compounds. Place one ounce of chopped, fresh ginger root into a cup of boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes. Apply this tea this concoction to the affected area twice daily.

Licorice root has the most anti-fungal compounds of all the herbs. Licorice tea is rather sweet-tasting. Gently boil 1/2 tsp. powdered root to 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Drink up to 2 cups daily

Oregano oil has antifungal properties. One source suggests mixing three to five drops of the oil with 5mL extra virgin olive oil (to make it more palatable) and putting two or three drops of this mixture under the tongue several times a day. You can also mix seven to ten drops with 90 ml of sweet almond oil and as some to a bath.

Pau d'arco has excellent anti-fungal properties. Take 1,500 mg three times daily.

Oil of turmeric has been shown to inhibit the growth of several fungi. Mix one part oil with two parts water and apply directly to the affected area.
