Page 1 of 4 (also refererred to as...) Hypotension Description Generally, lower blood pressure is desirable. It means there is less stress put on the heart and cardiovascular system in general. However, there is a point at which blood pressure is officially termed hypotension. This value varies among individuals depending on gender and age. Low blood pressure is rarely serious. Asymptomatic low blood pressure is more common in women that are of a slim build. It can occur alone or as a symptom of an underlying ailment such as hypothyroidism, some heart conditions, kidney disease, and diabetes (if not managed properly) to name a few. Symptoms and Signs: You may experience fatigue, fainting spells, low endurance, and cold hands and feet. You may also feel dizzy at times, especially when standing up from a seated or lying position. You may also feel chilly, require more sleep than the average person, and you may be particularly sensitive to extremes in weather. If you suffer from fainting spells or if you tend to "black out" quite often, your hypotension may require more serious investigation.
