Page 1 of 7 Description Located only in a male, the prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder and behind the penis. Its purpose is to generate prostatic fluid -- the greater portion of a man's semen -- which guides sperm through the urethra to be ejaculated during male orgasm. Behind lung cancer, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for men by cancer. It is a disease which affects mostly older men. Four out of five cases are diagnosed in men over 65, and most men into their 80s and 90s are usually affected to some degree; less than 1% of all cases are found in men under 50.
