(also referred to as...)
Gamma-L-Glutamyl-L-Cysteinylglycine, GSH
Description
Glutathione, or GSH, is not an amino acid, but a tripeptide -- a protein molecule (peptide) formed from three amino acids. GSH is formed from the amino acids L-glutamate (an excitatory amino acid), L-cysteine, and glycine.
GSH is a powerful antioxidant produced by the liver and protects against free radical damage. This essential amino is highly concentrated in the liver but is also found in all tissue cells: the liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and lenses of the eyes. It also protects against peroxidation, where lipid peroxides alter unsaturated lipids in cell membranes.
Ailments / Situations Where Used
GSH protects and maintains the integrity of red and white blood cells. It helps detoxify harmful compounds such as carbon monoxide released from cars, drugs, smog, heavy metals, pesticides, et cetera. GSH is also an immune system booster that facilitates the transport of amino acids and nutrients to a number of immune system cells, including phagocytes. These white blood cells directly attack viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders.
Its antioxidant properties help prevent against disease and increase longevity. GSH may prevent and can help treat auto-immune diseases, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, cataracts, and liver diseases.
Source
Supplemental GSH is available in capsules and tablets in various doses. It is quite expensive. Also available as part of a multi-amino acid complex.
Optimal Absorption
NAC is a precursor to GSH. Vitamin C also increases GSH levels.
Contraindications / Precautions / Warnings
It is not recommended to take a single amino acid for an extended period of time without supplementing with other amino acids as well. Long-term isolated amino acid supplementation can create an imbalance in the body.
