Description
Alpha-lipoic acid is both water and fat-soluble and is known as the "antioxidant's antioxidant" or the "universal antioxidant". In addition to being a powerful coenzyme, this antioxidant enhances the effectiveness of several antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10. Alpha-Lipoic acid regenerates and recycles these antioxidants so they continuously neutralize free radical damage in the body. This nutrient's secondary role is the metabolism of food into energy.
Composed of hydrogen, sulfur, and fatty acids, Alpha-lipoic acid is able to function in all areas of our cells. It is turns off bad genes that accelerate aging or promote cancer and is an important cofactor in the metabolism of the branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Alpha-lipoic acid also regulates and metabolizes glucose in the body. It is effective in preventing LDL oxidation, which leads to liver and artery damage, or atherosclerosis (Cardiovascular disease).
