Description
Grape seed extract is a nutrient primarily derived from the seeds of grapes but is found in the skin and stems. It has powerful antioxidant properties and has protective compounds known as flavonoids. These include oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), anthocyananins, quercetin, catechin, ellagic acid and reveratrol, which is also found in red wine. OPCs may be up to fifty times more potent than vitamin E and twenty times more potent than vitamin C in terms of their bioavailable antioxidant activity. For more information on OPCs, see Pycnogenol.
Ailments / Situations Where Used
Grape seed extract is capable of reducing free radical damage associated with premature aging and degenerative diseases. It strengthens and repairs connective tissue, including the cardiovascular system, and inhibits the formation of histamine, reducing allergic and asthmatic symptoms.
Grape seed extract binds to collagen to restore elasticity and flexibility to strengthen joints, skin, arteries, and connective tissue. It reduces inflammation and helps prevent age-related eye disorders, and improves night vision. The extract also has anti-fungal activity and is effective in protecting the liver by facilitating the elimination of harmful chemicals.
Grape seed extract may treat or prevent heart disease, cancer, allergies, asthma, arthritis, cataracts, liver diseases, skin diseases, and autoimmune diseases including HIV infection and AIDS. It also protects the immune system, improves circulation, prevents blood clotting, and helps lower cholesterol levels.
When applied topically, grape seed extract inhibits the destruction of collagen and protects connective tissue. It also has anti-bacterial and soothing properties and protects capillary walls. When used as a cream or gel, grape seed extract can promote smooth, healthy skin.

Optimal Absorption
Grape seed extract is exceptionally bioavailable and readily absorbed by the body.
If supplementing, take 25 to 100mg daily, in divided doses.
You can obtain these benefits, though in less concentrated form, by drinking red wine and purple grape juice and also eating red grapes. Of the three, red wine would have the highest concentration of OPCs. Purchase organic grapes whenever possible, as this fruit is often highly contaminated by pesticide residue.
