Sweet Fennel
Latin Name: Foeniculum vulgare
Description
The essence of sweet fennel is distilled from the fruit that is imported from Spain. It has a sweet, licorice-like scent and is often used to flavour confectioner's candy. Fennel was once used to ward off evil spirits.
Qi characteristics: warm and dry, element - earth. Blends with: geranium, lavender, rose and sandalwood.
Ailments / Situations Where Used
Fennel's draining and detoxifying properties make it useful in the treatment of cellulite, although it must not exceed a 1% dilution (one drop essential oil in 1tsp of carrier oil). It is best when blended with grapefruit, geranium and peppermint. Fennel has an estrogen mimicking effect, so it is helpful for women undergoing the natural hormonal changes of life. Fennel can also be used to deal with mental and emotional difficulties.
Emotional profile: to aid with mental and emotional blocks, resisting change, fear of failure, creativity blocks.
Midwives commonly suggest Fennel's use in order to increase breast milk production for those who are nursing, although it should not, at any time be applied to the body where the babies can accidentally ingest it.
Preparations
Cellulite - add five drops of fennel, ten drops of grapefruit and six drops of geranium to 30 ml of jojoba. Massage a small amount into area morning and night.

Due to its hormone influencing effect, fennel should not be used on children, or adolescents under the age of 16.
