Latin Name: Plantago ovata, P. ispaghula

Description

Psyllium seed is native to Iran and India and is well known for its high fibre / mucilage content.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

Psyllium has been historically used as a topical treatment for minor skin irritations such as poison ivy and insect bites and stings.

It is recognized for its bulk-forming properties and is thus used as a laxative to maintain regularity and treat mild constipation. Many commercial laxative preparations use psyllium seed husk as a base.

Psyllium is also used to treat atherosclerosis, diabetes, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, high cholesterol and triglycerides, irritable bowel syndrome, and psoriasis. It has also been used as an aid for weight loss and obesity.
