Bêche de Mer, Trepang

Description

Contrary to their name, sea cucumbers are actually marine animals related to starfishes and sea urchins.

Sea cucumber is a source of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and C, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

It is believed that sea cucumbers help balance prostaglandins -- hormone-like substances that regulate the inflammatory process and also protect against heart disease and cancer. Indeed, many Chinese cultures have used sea cucumber as an arthritis treatment for thousands of years.

Sea cucumber may also benefit musculoskeletal inflammatory diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, a rheumatic disease affecting the spine. Other substances inherent in sea cucumber include mucupolysaccharides and chondroitins, which are typically deficient in those with arthritis and connective tissue disorders.

Contraindications / Precautions / Warnings

If you have a seafood or shellfish allergy, consult with your naturopath or other health practitioner before using sea cucumber.
