Latin Name: Hordeum vulgare

Description

Barley grass is a popular food used by many cultures throughout the world and has been in cultivation since 7,000 BCE. This green grass contains eighteen amino acids (eight of which are essential), beta carotene, vitamin B1, B2, B5, B6 B12, C, calcium, folic acid, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and more than 70 other trace minerals.

The nutritional content of this grass is truly incredible. Per serving, barley grass contains seven times the vitamin C of oranges, four times the iron of spinach, eleven times the calcium of cow's milk, and 8mg B12 per gram.

Barley grass also contains chlorophyll, arethus, glucan, and hordenine, all of which possess beneficial properties further outlined below.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

Barley grass has deodorant properties due, in part, to the chlorophyll content. It can help stimulate red blood cells (RBCs) and promote tissue growth. Barley grass also contains a substance called arethus that helps promote continual cell proliferation, regeneration, and energy production. Glucan, a type of fibre found in barley grass, may help reduce cholesterol levels.

An alkaloid called hordenine, found in the root of the grass, has been reported to stimulate peripheral blood circulation and has been used as a bronchodilater in cases of bronchitis. The bran has anti-carcinogenic properties.

The chlorophyll content also freshens breath.

Source

The entire plant may be used -- grass, grain, bran, and root.

Optimal Absorption

Barley grass can have a powerful cleansing effect on your body. Start with low doses so as not to shock your system and work your way up. Barley grass has a rather "unique" taste that will take getting used to.

If using in powder form, take 1 - 3 teaspoons (3 - 9g) daily in 8oz./250mL water, vegetable juice, or any non-citrus juice. Use a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake for ten seconds. Take on an empty stomach.

If using in capsule form, take 500mg two to three times daily with meals.

If preparing barley grass juice at home, use a high quality juicer that does not generate a lot of friction and heat. The nutritional quality of barley grass is reduced when poorly processed.

Contraindications / Precautions / Warnings

As previously mentioned, do not start with high doses of barley grass.
