Herbs - General Guidelines for Herbal Product Production |
|
General Guidelines for Herbal Product Production - Always make sure you have properly identified the herbs you are using. Use their Latin Botanical Names for proper identification and always buy your seeds, plants, and fresh or dried herbs from an organic, reputable supplier.
- Ensure your equipment and work area is clean and all bottles and jars have been sterilized -- either run through the heat wash cycle of your dishwasher or boil in water for 15 minutes.
- Unless your lids are glass, never reuse lids or corks for preparing and storing herbal products. Most herbal supply/bottle supply companies sell lids separately from the bottle/jar.
- Use pots, bowls and other processing equipment that are made from non-reactive material, such as stainless, glass, or enamel.
- Never store herbs or herbal products in plastic containers, as the chemicals in the plastic may leech into your products. Whenever possible, use amber glass containers and store in a cool dark place.
- Never leave oil unattended on the stove as most have a very low flash (ignition) point.
- Purchase your other base ingredients (oils, vinegars, honey, et cetera) from reputable, organic, sources whenever possible.
- Ensure you always accurately label and date all your products both during the processing and bottling/packaging stages. If possible, include all ingredients and recommended uses to avoid any confusion later.
- When using dried herbs, it is best to obtain quality air-dried herbs that have been organically grown and recently harvested.
- When buying products from another source, check that no artificial additives or preservatives have been added. Become a label reader.
- If unsure of the correct use(s) of an herb or herbal product, always use a reference such as a this website, another recognized text, or other reliable source.
