Chinese Licorice

Latin Name: Glycyrrhiza glabra / uralensis

Family: Leguminosae / Papilionaceae

Description

The active ingredient of licorice is considered to be glycyrrhizin. This element is often used by Japanese medical treatments in its isolated form.

Licorice is sweet-tasting and can be used as a tea.

Glycyrrhiza glabra is the most common variety originating from southern Europe and southwest Asia. It is the sour of most commercial licorice. Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Chinese licorice or "Gan-cao") is the most commonly used Chinese medicinal herb and is used in almost all prescriptions. It is seen as a general tonic and improves the taste of all medicines.
