Description

Colloidal silver is pure, submicroscopic silver particles that are suspended in deionized, ozonated, or distilled water. Colloidal silver is claimed to be effective against 650 different bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It asserts this effectiveness by disabling a pathogen's oxygen metabolizing enzyme while not affecting the enzymes of the human body. In addition, microorganisms do not seem to develop a resistance to colloidal silver.

There appears to be a significant amount of conflicting information regarding the effectiveness and safety of using silver products. An ideal approach would be to gather information on colloidal silver from various sources and discuss with your naturopath or other health practitioner as to the appropriateness of this substance for your needs.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

Colloidal silver can be used to treat a number of different bacteria, viral, or fungal infections, due to its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties respectively. It can also be useful for rosacea, acne, and stomach ulcers.

Optimal Absorption

A variety of companies suspend varying amounts of silver in solution; anywhere from 5 parts per million (ppm) to 30 ppm. Read the label before using.

Colloidal silver should be taken on an empty stomach thirty minutes before a meal. A number of preparations suggest varying amounts of solution to be taken. Again, read the label for direction.

Some sources maintain that it is best to place the solution under the tongue for optimal absorption if taking internally. Colloidal silver can also be found as a nasal spray to be inhaled, or a salve for topical application.

Contraindications / Precautions / Warnings

Do not use if pregnant or lactating.

Colloidal silver is not recommended for continual use. Some sources suggest using it for fourteen days, then stopping for seven days, then repeat if necessary. Other sources recommend a maximum of ten days continuous use. Again, discuss with your naturopath or other health practitioner.

Do not use in eyes.

Keep out of reach of children.

Store at room temperature away from electrical appliances, magnets, and direct sunlight.

Some sources state that long-term use of any type of medicinal silver preparation may cause a condition known as argyria, whereby silver deposits occur in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, leaving the skin an ashen-gray colour.
