Preparing An Enema

There is a variety of methods to preparing an enema. Some techniques address specific situations while others are more suitable for general use. The basic enema preparation and four popular variations are outlined below.

General Cleansing Enema

Before you begin, ensure that all equipment has been thoroughly sterilized and that there are no nicks, scrapes, or sharp points on the end of the enema tube. A soft tube and good quality rubber enema balloon will make the enema easier to administer.

Use lukewarm steam-distilled water between 80ºF - 99ºF (27ºC - 37ºC). The warmer temperature will relax your bowel while a cooler temperature will strengthen it. NOTE: Temperatures below 75ºF/24ºC may cause uncomfortable cramping. You may also wish to add one-tablespoon salt. Fill an enema bag with 1/2 to 1 quart (0.55 to 1.1L) fluid for a child ten years or older or no more than 2 quarts/2.2L for an adult. 1 pint/550mL may be used for younger children. Place the bag approximately eighteen inches above you.

Lubricate the anus and the end of the enema tube with non-irritating lotion or oil (vitamin E oil or aloe vera gel works well) and lie partially on your head, with your buttocks in the air, on a comfortable surface. Alternatively, lie on your left side, with your knees pulled towards your chin, and buttocks relaxed. Insert the tubing into the anus to a depth of 11/2 to 2 inches. Hold the tube in place and slowly release the valve, allowing the fluid to enter the colon. Hold the solution for three to four minutes, then release into the toilet.

You may feel quite tired and/or cool after an enema. Keep warm and sleep for one or more hours.

NOTE: For a retention enema, follow the above procedure and hold the solution for approximately fifteen minutes, or until you feel the urge to release.
