B₁₇ first built a reputation for its anti-cancer properties and is used in Europe for this purpose. It is not approved for use in the United States. It is also not legally available in Canada.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rejected this vitamin on the grounds it may be poisonous. Chemically, B₁₇ consists of two sugar molecules: benzaldehyde and cyanide. Approval is denied due to the cyanide content.
